Central Bank of India has reported that 187 unauthorised transfers worth Rs 13.97 crore left its settlement account with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) between October 15 and October 17, 2026. The bank's general manager for treasury filed a complaint, and a case has been registered at the Nodal Cyber Police Station in Mumbai against unknown persons for cheating and personation.

The bank's internal team could not find any of the 187 transfers in its branches, internet banking, mobile banking, core banking system, RTGS settlement records or its own SFMS server. The complaint alleges that unknown persons reached a central messaging server run by Indian Financial Technology and Allied Services (IFTAS) through the bank's server. The investigation is still under way.

How SFMS payment messages normally move, and what the bank could not trace

SFMS is the Structured Financial Messaging System. Banks use it to send the messages behind RTGS and NEFT payments. IFTAS, a subsidiary of the RBI, runs the central SFMS server.

Investigators found partial traces linked to 10 accounts in SFMS database logs, but the matching transaction ID numbers were missing from the bank's own records. The accounts listed as the source of the payments did not belong to Central Bank of India.

What Central Bank of India says about customers and RTGS services

The bank has said that no customer account was impacted and that its core banking system remains secure. It has also said that RTGS services have resumed for customers across all channels. The bank described a technical issue in the interface environment of its local RTGS server.

What police have said so far

Police are investigating, and the case is against unknown persons. Police sources quoted in reports said limited information is available on the trail of the money.
